Sri Lanka Technical Information for Travelers

Sri Lanka Technical Information – In Short

Sri Lanka Technical Information – In Details

Sri Lanka Voltage

The voltage in Sri Lanka is 230 V which is the same voltage used in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

230 V has an advantage over lower voltage such as the 110 V that it is cheaper to transmit. On the other hand, 230 V is more dangerous than lower voltages.

Sri Lanka Electrical Frequency

The electrical frequency in Sri Lanka is 50 Hz.

Note that most household and electrical/electronic equipments nowadays support multiple frequencies, so generally, electrical frequency is not an issue compatibility wise.

Sri Lanka Plug/Socket Type(s)

Sri Lanka uses the D plug.

Plugs/sockets are usually an issue when it comes to traveling, so always make sure you travel with a universal plug adapter.

Sri Lanka DVD Region

Sri Lanka uses DVD Region 5.

DVD Region 5 is used by Russia and countries in the former Soviet Union, as well as African countries with the exception of Egypt and South Africa (both are region 2).

Note that a region 5 DVD cannot play on a DVD player supporting another region. There are, however, some region free DVD players available that can be used to overcome this.

Sri Lanka Blu-ray Region

Sri Lanka uses Blu-ray Region C.

Blu-ray Region C is mainly used in China, India, Pakistan, and Russia, as well as Central/South Asia.

Theoretically, a region C Blu-ray disc should not play in Blu-ray disc players supporting another region. However, most Blu-ray discs are now region free (meaning they can work on any Blu-ray disc player), and most Blu-ray players are also region free. Hence, compatibility is rarely an issue (for now) when it comes to Blu-ray discs.

Sri Lanka GSM Freqency(ies)

Sri Lanka uses the GSM 900 GSM frequency.

When travelling, make sure that your phone supports the GSM frequency of the country you’re traveling to. Usually the supported GSM frequencies are printed on the box of your phone as well as its manual.
